Own the codebase: why SaaS product logic should not be rented

Renting workflow logic from SaaS means your margin pays twice: licence fees and manual work around the gaps.

The ownership checklist

  • Source code in your Git org.
  • Production deploy access documented.
  • Environment variables and secrets inventory.
  • Runbook: how to deploy, roll back, add a user.
  • Data export path if you leave the vendor.

When renting is fine

Commodity tools with no workflow differentiation (email, accounting). When the workflow is your edge, own the layer.

Use this as a working checklist inside your team first. When the same steps repeat every week and spreadsheets start breaking, that is usually the moment to scope source code, deployment access, documentation and the workflow model in one handover as an owned system.
